Reframing "African Art"
Join artists Abraham O. Oghobase, Mallory Lowe Mpoka and Moridja Kitenge Banza in a conversation offering unique insights into their individual practices across various mediums, perspectives, and cultural influences.
Moridja Kitenge Banza, (b.1980, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo) is a Canadian artist of Congolese origin, based in Montreal. His artistic approach lies somewhere between reality and fiction, a means by which he questions the history, memory and identity of the places where he lives or have lived in relation to the place he occupies in them.
Mallory Lowe Mpoka , (b. 1996, Montreal, Canada) is queer Cameroonian Belgian multidisciplinary artist and cultural worker who works between Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal) and Douala. Her practice draws on archival photographs and personal experiences and examines how individuals navigate places, continually reconsidering the nature of identity and belonging.
Abraham O. Oghobase (b. 1979 in Lagos, Nigeria) is a visual artist living and working in Toronto, Canada. In his photography-based practice, he engages with issues around knowledge production, land, colonial history and representation by deconstructing traditional modes of making, and by experimenting with the narrative and material potential of images and objects.
Moderated by Adekunle Adeniji
African art historian and curator with expertise in historical, contemporary, and global African arts. Adeniji was the Anderman Family Curatorial Fellow at the Denver Art Museum (2022-2023), where he curated the reinstallation of the African Arts gallery. He has a B.A. in Fine Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University and an M.A. in African Studies (Visual Arts) from the University of Ibadan. He is a Ph.D. candidate in art history at Queen's University.

Close-Looking at Helen McNicoll’s Interior

In this video we have animated Helen McNicoll’s painting Interior (around 1913, oil on canvas, Art Gallery of Ontario.) The elements that show the movement of light and give evidence of the room’s recent occupation by someone are highlighted: a robe, tossed on the chair, which may tip over at any moment, and a row of footprints on the carpet. The brilliant shaft of sunlight that streaks across ...

AWESOME VIDEO! THANK YOU! When I was in late Elementary school in the NY suburbs, it was my life's ambition to get into Studio. It didn't happen until the late Spring of 1983 and I was somewhat of a regular there for that summer. Even though it was way past the glory days, it was still thee most amazing thing I'd ever seen or experienced. By my 2nd semester in college I was DJing in the more prestigious nightclubs in Westchester & Fairfield counties. As a DJ, Studio will always have a place in my heart as it was always & is the pinnacle. I've been in a lot of clubs over the years, but Studio was in a league of its own. Even though it's gone, the legacy it leaves can't be overstated.

I lived in NY in the 1970s but never learned to do the Hustle because you needed a partner. 😞 After sitting through another "tutorial" elsewhere where a gal was teaching a line dance as "the Hustle," it was refreshing to see someone else doing the correct (coupled) dance, even if I never got to do it back then!
